Webtalk, May 9, 2–3:30 PM CEST
You are cordially invited to this Webtalk:
Anti-rights-movements increasingly target LGBTQI+ and women’s rights globally. Across the African continent, the struggle for human rights and particularly for sexual and reproductive rights is shaped by both colonial legacies and contemporary geopolitical shifts. The U.S.’s departure from its leadership role in development cooperation and humanitarian aid, and the impact of globally operating faith-based actors in shaping anti-LGBTQI+ legislation impact feminist and LGBTQI+ human rights defenders. In this time of multilayered global assault on the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals, it is crucial to respond in solidarity and in a way that takes a decolonial approach seriously.
Speakers:

Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation and Amnesty International cordially invite you to this webtalk featuring feminist and LGBTQI+ activists from Uganda and Namibia to discuss the following questions:
- What are the consequences of the sudden stop of USAID for the activism regarding LGBTQI+ in Namibia and Uganda?
- All programs to support LGBTQI+ rights and gender equality are to be stopped and Anti-rights-movements are to be supported. What will this mean in practice?
- How are queer and feminist movements in Namibia and Uganda (and transnationally) countering current repressive trends?
- What role do international actors play in shaping legal frameworks both restrictive and protective for queer people?
- How can partnerships between Global South and Global North as well as regional queer movements be (re)defined to be (more) effective and equitable?
- What strategies ensure that movements remain resilient despite hostile conditions?
Join us for a vital discussion on the repercussions of history, politics, and human rights in Namibia and Uganda today.
The event will be held in English and German, with simultaneous interpretation.
An event organised in cooperation between Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation and Amnesty International. As part of the project “The Pink Factor: LGBTQI+-Rights in the Geopolitical Conflict about Values and Resources”.
