On May 29, 2026, the Ghanaian Parliament passed an anti- LGBTIQ+ law. People who identify as LGBTIQ* as well as their allies face prison sentences of several years under this law. This article explains that the primary drivers of this current anti-rights wave in Ghana are actually external, ultra-conservative Western actors whose regressive agenda goes against the culture of quiet tolerance of pre-colonial Ghanian societies.

LSBTIQ*-Menschenrechte werden machtpolitisch instrumentalisiert. Repressive Regierungen und einzelne Politiker verweigern, kritisieren oder beschränken sie, um von ineffizientem Regierungshandeln und eigenem Fehlverhalten abzulenken. In wirtschaftlichen Krisen oder Phasen des ökonomischen Niedergangs steigen Anfeindungen und Bedrohungen von queeren Menschen durch Regierende – oft mit Hilfe von homophoben religiösen Autoritäten, beispielsweise fundamentalistischen Kirchenvertretern, flankiert von aggressiver Hetze durch Medien (digitale und konservative Medienkanäle/-formate).
Golden Moyo* is a lay preacher in rural Zimbabwe. In 2018, after decades of hiding his sexual orientation, Moyo came out to his family and friends and his parish as gay.
Attitudes to sexual and gender minorities in Zimbabwe are highly conservative. Those found guilty of consensual same-sex sexual activity could face up to one year’s imprisonment and a fine. The southern African country’s anti-homosexuality law was first introduced by the British during its colonisation of Zimbabwe.
