For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, rejection and abuse disrupt educational pathways and limit future opportunities. Combined with systemic discrimination, these barriers often result in reduced access to stable employment, financial independence, and the ability to fully participate in and contribute to the broader economy. Two recently published studies shed light on the often-overlooked financial and social benefits of actively including LGBTQIA+ communities in economic life. They highlight not only the transformative potential of inclusion, but also the significant costs that discrimination imposes on national economies.

Question: What becomes possible when we stop treating queer justice, feminist liberation, labour rights, and climate action as separate battles and start building the unified movement our survival demands?
Answer: A comprehensive and promising approach to tackling the issues crucial to the survival of us all. On a macro-level, any approach to climate justice must include the Global South. On a micro-level, social injustice disproportionately affects vulnerable people without whom no global solution is possible. If we combine these macro and micro-levels, it quickly becomes clear that queer and feminist perspectives from Africa are uniquely placed to point the way forward.
On May 29, 2026, the Ghanaian Parliament passed an anti- LGBTIQ+ law. People who identify as LGBTIQ* as well as their allies face prison sentences of several years under this law. This article explains that the primary drivers of this current anti-rights wave in Ghana are actually external, ultra-conservative Western actors whose regressive agenda goes against the culture of quiet tolerance of pre-colonial Ghanian societies.
